{"id":141,"date":"2016-08-20T18:40:32","date_gmt":"2016-08-20T18:40:32","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.coolsociology.net\/SOAN390\/?page_id=141"},"modified":"2016-08-20T18:40:32","modified_gmt":"2016-08-20T18:40:32","slug":"two-papers","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/soan390.mcguire-spickard.com\/?page_id=141","title":{"rendered":"Two Papers"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><u><\/u>You will each write two long papers, showing that you can apply the thought of our four social theorists to a present-day social issue.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The first paper should be 10-12 pages in length, typewritten, double-spaced with standard mar\u00adgins (that&#8217;s about 2500-3000 words).<\/li>\n<li>The second paper should be 7-8 pages long (1750-2000 words).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Both should be based on primary sources (esp. the \u201cB\u201d readings) though you may use secondary sources for ideas and guidance.\u00a0 Include proper footnotes, references and a bibliography (not part of the page length), in ASA style (look it up!).<\/p>\n<p>You will write several drafts of each paper\u2014this IS a WB course, remember! \u00a0Turn them in at the course <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/learn.redlands.edu\" target=\"_blank\">Moodle site<\/a>,<\/strong> in the Homework Dropbox folder.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong><em>For the first paper:<\/em> Imagine that Karl Marx and Emile Durkheim are sitting in the Plaza Caf\u00e9 (or a similar watering spot)\u00a0discussing\u00a0some current social issue<\/strong>.\n<ul>\n<li>Write a paper which recreates their conversation.<\/li>\n<li>In it, show what each of these theorists would say about the problem, and what each would recommend to solve it.<\/li>\n<li>Use dialogue to show what each fails to appreciate about the problem and how this failure is the result of his basic approach to social life.<\/li>\n<li>Be sure to give each theorist a chance to respond to these criticisms.<\/li>\n<li>You may write yourself into the conversation, if you like, though you do not need to.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><strong><em>For the second paper:<\/em> Imagine that you are Max Weber, who has been asked to give a speech on the same issue<\/strong>.\n<ul>\n<li>Write a paper recreating that speech.<\/li>\n<li>In it, let Weber give his analysis of this social issue, along with his specific recommendations for dealing with it (or not, if that is what he would recommend).<\/li>\n<li><strong>Allow two pages at the end for W.E.B. Du Bois to comment on the speech, both its analysis and its recommendations.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Here are the steps for Paper #1:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Choose a writing partner or partners <strong>by<\/strong><strong>\u00a0the day listed on the<\/strong> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.coolsociology.net\/SOAN390\/?page_id=32\"><strong>Schedule page<\/strong><\/a>. \u00a0 <strong>Make sure you notify me in writing\u00a0of your choice<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>Chose a current social issue about which you are seriously interested.\u00a0 Learn everything you can about it.\u00a0 Locate and read at least 6 sociological accounts of the issue, written from at least three different points of view.\u00a0 Work these into an annotated bibliography, which you are to turn in before class time\u00a0<strong>on the day listed on the<\/strong> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.coolsociology.net\/SOAN390\/?page_id=32\"><strong>Schedule page<\/strong><\/a>.\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Turn this in on <a href=\"http:\/\/learn.redlands.edu\" target=\"_blank\">Moodle<\/a><\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>As soon as we have finished the unit on Marx, decide what Marx would say about this social problem.\u00a0 Organize your arguments into an outline, turning them in before class time \u00a0<strong>on the day listed on the<\/strong> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.coolsociology.net\/SOAN390\/?page_id=32\"><strong>Schedule page<\/strong><\/a>. \u00a0<strong>Turn this in on <a href=\"http:\/\/learn.redlands.edu\" target=\"_blank\">Moodle<\/a><\/strong>.\n<ul>\n<li>Begin thinking about where Marx &amp; Durkheim will meet, what personalities you want to give them, etc.<\/li>\n<li>I suggest that you begin drafting Marx\u2019s dialogue, also.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>As soon as we have finished the unit on Durkheim, decide what Durkheim would say about this social problem.\u00a0 Organize your arguments into an outline, turning them before class time\u00a0<strong>on the day listed on the<\/strong> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.coolsociology.net\/SOAN390\/?page_id=32\"><strong>Schedule page<\/strong><\/a>. <strong>Turn this in on <a href=\"http:\/\/learn.redlands.edu\" target=\"_blank\">Moodle<\/a><\/strong>.\n<ul>\n<li><strong>By the same date and time,<\/strong> turn in your decision about where Marx &amp; Durkheim will meet, any special circumstances of their meeting, and give a general sense of the personalities that you will give them.\u00a0 Two pages maximum! \u00a0<strong>Turn this in on the course <a href=\"http:\/\/learn.redlands.edu\" target=\"_blank\">Moodle site<\/a><\/strong>, in the Homework Dropbox folder.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Write a complete draft of your paper and turn in a copy before class <strong>on the day listed on the<\/strong> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.coolsociology.net\/SOAN390\/?page_id=32\"><strong>Schedule page<\/strong><\/a>. <strong>Turn this in on <a href=\"http:\/\/learn.redlands.edu\" target=\"_blank\">Moodle<\/a><\/strong>.\u00a0 Simultaneously, give a printed copy to your writing partner for written peer review.\n<ul>\n<li><em><strong>I am serious when I say that this draft should be complete; it should be as good as the typical paper that you turn in for the typical class.\u00a0<\/strong><\/em> It should have no typographic errors, no issues of spelling or grammar, etc.\u00a0 It should also make sense.\u00a0 Handing in a piece of junk at this stage will result in no credit for the assignment.<\/li>\n<li>A word to the wise: you are advised to make this the actual second draft, having written a previous, private draft to get your ideas on paper.\u00a0 Good writers always write a throw-away draft.\u00a0 This frees them to write a second draft, whose ideas are inevitably better developed.\u00a0 <strong><em>This is the most important writing advice you will receive in this course<\/em><\/strong><strong><em>.<\/em><\/strong>&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Review your writing partner\u2019s (or group\u2019s) paper(s), focusing first on the intellectual content and only secondarily on the style.\u00a0 (Authors: Don\u2019t depend on your partner to fix your grammar;
