{"id":41,"date":"2014-08-26T14:58:54","date_gmt":"2014-08-26T14:58:54","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.coolsociology.net\/SOAN390\/?page_id=41"},"modified":"2016-08-28T20:30:04","modified_gmt":"2016-08-28T20:30:04","slug":"expectations","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/soan390.mcguire-spickard.com\/?page_id=41","title":{"rendered":"Expectations"},"content":{"rendered":"<p align=\"left\">In 30+ years of teaching, I\u2019ve learned a few things about how to make a class work. \u00a0Here is a summary of my expectations \u2014 things that we can all do that help us all learn:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><strong>Be considerate with technology:<\/strong>\n<ol>\n<li>Educational research shows that using computers to take notes reduces student learning.\n<ul>\n<li>For details, see <a href=\"http:\/\/chronicle.com\/blogs\/linguafranca\/2014\/08\/25\/why-im-asking-you-not-to-use-laptops\/\" target=\"_blank\">HERE<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/pii\/S0360131512002254\" target=\"_blank\">HERE<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/blogs\/answer-sheet\/wp\/2014\/09\/25\/why-a-leading-professor-of-new-media-just-banned-technology-use-in-class\/\" target=\"_blank\">HERE<\/a>, and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.scientificamerican.com\/article\/a-learning-secret-don-t-take-notes-with-a-laptop\/\" target=\"_blank\">HERE<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>You can find a guide to the Cornell Method of note-taking <a href=\"https:\/\/lawyerist.com\/75163\/cornell-method-note-taking\/\" target=\"_blank\">HERE<\/a> and can download a PDF guide <a href=\"http:\/\/www.coolsociology.net\/SOAN390\/documents\/Cornell-Note_Taking-System.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">HERE<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>Those with documented learning issues should see me.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Unless you are a parent, please turn off all cell phones, pagers, text-messengers, etc. \u00a0Parents and others who have special responsibilities can put them on vibrate &#8212; but talk to me, so I know your situation.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Come to class on time.\u00a0<\/strong> If you wake up late, it\u2019s okay to come in your pajamas, eat your breakfast, or whatever.\u00a0 Just be here, contributing and paying attention.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Don\u2019t leave before the end of class.\u00a0\u00a0<\/strong> You don\u2019t have to meet with other professors, register, answer phone calls, pee, etc. during class time.\u00a0 This class is your first priority during scheduled class hours.\u00a0 Please plan ahead.<\/li>\n<li><b>Policy on Late Work<br \/>\n<\/b>Work turned in late makes my life very difficult.\u00a0 There are, however, occasions when you have to make a choice about what you do with your time.\u00a0 In the interests of fairness and equality, you may turn in your work late. There will normally be consequences, however, as follows:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Work turned in up to 5 minutes after the beginning of class is \u201con time\u201d.\n<ul>\n<li>You may give me late work personally, or you may give it to the SOAN Secretary in the SOAN Department Office.\u00a0 If the latter, you must get it time-stamped. Otherwise I count it as \u2018submitted\u2019 when I pick it up \u2014 sometimes a few days later.<\/li>\n<li>Don\u2019t expect emailed work to be counted as \u2018on time\u2019.\u00a0\u00a0 I\u2019m old enough to work best with paper copies.\u00a0 Humor me.<\/li>\n<li><strong>You will, however, submit some assignments on the course\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/learn.redlands.edu\" target=\"_blank\">Moodle site<\/a>,<\/strong> in the Homework Dropbox folder. \u00a0See this site&#8217;s\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.coolsociology.net\/SOAN390\/?page_id=35\"><strong>Assignments page<\/strong><\/a> for details to see which ones qualify.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Late work loses 1\/3 grade for each 24 hour period after the time it is due.\u00a0 E.g.:\n<ul>\n<li>Work that I receive less than 24 hours after it is due is marked down 1\/3 grade.\u00a0 (A \u201cB\u201d becomes a \u201cB minus\u201d.)<\/li>\n<li>Work that I receive more than 24 hours but less than 48 hours after it is due is marked down 2\/3 grade.\u00a0 (A \u201cB\u201d becomes a \u201cC plus\u201d.) \u00a0Etc.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><em>I make exceptions for parents and others who need special accommodations.<\/em> \u00a0<em>See me if this is the case.<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Policy on Academic Honesty<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>The University has an Academic Honesty Policy, which you can find in the latest University Catalog. \u00a0<em>(<a href=\"http:\/\/viewer.zmags.com\/publication\/486522a6#\/486522a6\/18\" target=\"_blank\">Pp 17ff in the 2016-2018 version<\/a>.)<\/em>\n<ul>\n<li>The short version: Do your own work, cite your sources, don\u2019t try to cut corners.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Details about how infractions are handled can be found at the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.redlands.edu\/student-life\/student-conduct\/the-community-standards-process\/\" target=\"_blank\">University website<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Commitment to Universal Learning:<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>I am committed to the principle of universal learning. This means that our classroom, our virtual spaces, our practices, and our interactions should be as inclusive as possible. \u00a0Mutual respect, civility, and the ability to listen and observe others carefully are crucial to universal learning.<\/li>\n<li>Any student with particular needs should contact the University\u2019s\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.redlands.edu\/student-life\/student-academic-support.aspx\" target=\"_blank\">Academic Success Center<\/a>\u00a0at\u00a0the start of the semester.
